Third Host: Excerpt, Z and Malachi

April 10, 2008

Z snuck a kiss and then a taste of Malachi’s ice cream with a grin.

“Hey, you had your own ice cream,” said Malachi.

“Yeah, but it’s gone already. And this is for Anubis,” she held up the small container of vanilla ice cream.

“I can’t imagine that ice cream is all that healthy for dogs.”

“You just don’t have enough imagination. We’ll work on that later,” she grins and winks, leading him off the elevator and to the door, motioning for him to unlock it.

He rolls his eyes and hands her his ice cream while he unlocks the door. She steals another taste and then slips through the door in front of him. “Anubis! Mommy has a treat for you!”

The dog trotted up and bounced around her feat, tail wagging happily. Z handed Malachi’s ice cream back to him and then set the cup of vanilla on the ground for Anubis. He attacked it happily, tail continuing to waggle a mile a minute. Malachi shut the door and crossed over to loop an arm around Z’s waist.

Z leaned her head back against his shoulder and smiled up at him. “I think I might grab a bath, relax a bit.”

“You want to talk about whatever held you up on the way home?” said Malachi.

Z shifted a little against him and frowned, “Just got a call from… an old co-worker.”

“Anything I can do?”

“No. No, just a reminder that the past never really stops effecting the present,” said Z.

“I don’t know about that,” said Malachi. “I think things can change.”

Z turns and buries her head against his chest, smiling sadly, “See, that’s why the world is full of humans instead of angels.”

“Because we think things can change?”

“Because you are change,” Z answered, then looked up to him with a smile. “Thank you for the ice cream,” she stretched up and lightly kissed him.

Malachi kissed her back hard, setting his ice cream on the coffee table and drew her down onto the couch. “C’mere,” said Malachi. “Maybe you should take tomorrow off. Spend the day relaxing and having some fun.”

“That sounds like a pretty good idea.”
